Common furnace problems
Tell us what your furnace is doing when you call. It helps us come with the right parts.
No heat
The thermostat calls for heat but nothing happens, or the blower runs and the air stays cold.
Starts, then shuts off
The burners light and go out after a few seconds or minutes, again and again.
Clicks but won’t light
You hear the igniter or the inducer fan, but there is no flame.
Blinking light
Most furnaces show a fault code with a blinking light behind the front panel. Count the blinks and tell us when you call.
New noises
Banging at start-up, squealing, rattling or a loud blower.
Red-tagged
PG&E or a technician tagged the furnace as unsafe and shut off its gas. See below.
Check these before you call
Sometimes it’s a simple fix you can do yourself.
- The thermostat is set to Heat and above the room temperature. If it uses batteries, replace them.
- The furnace power switch is on. It often looks like a light switch on or near the furnace.
- The circuit breaker for the furnace isn’t tripped.
- The front panel is closed all the way. Many furnaces won’t run with the door open.
- The filter isn’t clogged. A very dirty filter can make the furnace shut itself off.

Leave your name and number and we’ll call you to set up a visit. Evening and weekend visits are available on request; weekend visits cost twice the visit fee.
Furnace red-tagged by PG&E?
A red tag means the furnace was found unsafe to run and its gas was shut off. Don’t turn the gas back on yourself.
What we do
We find the cause and tell you whether the furnace can be repaired safely. If it can, we repair it. If it can’t, you pay nothing for the visit.
If it needs replacing
We give you a written estimate for a new furnace. You can also price a new furnace online first.
Repair or replace?
We fix first. A furnace that can be repaired doesn’t need to be replaced, and if you do replace it later, the Fix-First Credit means the repair wasn’t money wasted.
Usually worth repairing
- One part failed on a furnace that has otherwise worked well
- No safety problem with the burners or the venting
Time to look at replacement
- The furnace was red-tagged and can’t be made safe
- It keeps breaking down, or parts are no longer available
- You want a quieter or more efficient furnace
